Farmers Warned to Do More to Protect Livestock
Sheep rustling may sound like a thing of the past however sheep rustling cases have more than doubled in the last 12 months with Northern Ireland, Wales, Lincolnshire and Lancashire being the worst hit areas. It’s estimated that more than 60,000 sheep were stolen in the UK in the first ten months of last year, with 9,000 being taken in north-west England alone.
Insurance company NFU Mutual says that livestock theft is costing farmers around £6 million a year and these figures are just based on insurance claims so the actual total may be much higher. Police are warning farmers that they need to be extra vigilant and take more precautions to ensure their livestock are protected.
